As you drive south from San Francisco, one of the first of the larger coastal towns that you'll come across in Monterey Bay is Monterey itself. Now this certainly is a town famous for rather a lot of things relating to the ocean! Namely, its harbour and fishing industry, its aquarium (one of the largest in America), its suitability as a scuba-diving location, and its noisy sea lions that have been known to congregate near the harbour!
Monterey Harbor (Harbour) Sign
As you enter Monterey, having departed Highway 1, it is recommended to park up at a metered space near the harbour. From there it's a quick walk to see all the boats in the marina, as well as those sailing in and out.
Monterey Marina
If you want to make a quick side visit to Monterey as part of your journey down Highway 1, it is recommended to park up at a metered space near the harbour. From there it's only a short walk to the marina.
If you've got more time to spend in Monterey, the aquarium is a must see. And for those old hippies and nostalgics amongst you...the town held the Monterey Pop Festival way back in 1967, which was a forerunner of Woodstock, and which is seen as establishing the hippie movement. More Useful Links
